February is a little cold, and a lot rainy!!! Thinking about all the work I have to do to get ready for spring is keeping me going. This month I start getting out some of my dahlia tubers and potting them up on a grow shelf to start them growing early to have larger plants to put out in May and to take cuttings to increase my stock of some varieties.
I've also bought a ton of annual flower seeds that I will be starting over the next month or so. For those of you who bought flowers from my roadside stand last summer, I'm hoping to add some variety to the bouquets available by growing some greenery and filler flowers to go along with all of the dahlias. So in March we will be building some new raised beds to serve as a home for the annuals. If you drive by in March and smell something stinky - that's the compost that I will have hauled in to fill the beds and dahlia field - it's amazing how much flowers like that stuff!! I'm glad we don't have to eat it! I'm also planning on having a Farm Open House on August 19 to 21 this summer - we will open the gates and let people tour the dahlia rows and display garden. There will also be some flower arranging workshops offered that weekend as well. Hope you enjoy watching our flowers and our farm grow!
